When and Where?
We climb at the Brunel wall (main sports hall) twice a week. The sessions are at 5-7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Tuesday is our main lesson but we repeat the lesson Thursday, as many students have lectures on Tuesday. After the lesson we often have a chat in bar Zest upstairs, so come up and talk if you feel like it.
The Course
As part of the one year course we build up skills to enable you to take part in safe outdoor multi-pitch climbing. Multi-pitch involves several stages or stops and can be sport or traditional.
The course starts inside on the Brunel wall at a beginners level progressing each week. See teaching for more information.
It is important to attend every week. If you miss a lesson you'll have to catch up later to learn what we covered in that session.
Cost
Joining the club costs £15, although you need to buy a sports fed card (£15) in order to be insured (this is the same for all clubs)
Teaching
We are taught by Mike Brightwell, a very capable professional instructor who has about 270 years of experience. If you put aside the stories he continuously talks about Mike is one of the best instructors we could hope for. His climbing partner Prof is also there every week to help demonstrate the techniques Mike teaches.
We learn how to handle rope, belay our partners, techniques of climbing, safety and rescue. By the end of the course you'll know all you need to know to be great at outdoor multi pitch climbing.
Mike designed Brunel wall so it offers different skill levels/challenges with examples of traditional and sport climbing. It is made up of features, but we also have a pump/bouldering room, which offers larger coloured holds.
Trips
We know that we have to put our practice to use so our club organizes frequent and cheap trips to Wales, Peak district. Trips are around £25-35, which pays for food, camping and the minibus. We are also lucky to be close to Westway sports centre wall 20 minutes away.
Social Events
Aside from lessons and trips we try to arrange frequent social events. Last year we had many sucessful social events such as an annual and Christmas dinner, a curry night, and pub crawls, which is why this year we have not one but two social secretaries! We will also be repeating our Flirt night at the Academy themed "Action man and Barbie" (02nd March 09). We try to accommodate what our members want so if you have any ideas let Steph or Debs, our social secretaries, know.
You will also find that exec and keen members visit the wall other than at lesson times. Ask around if you want to practice your skills and arrange to meet with a few others.
