THE YEAR TO COME 07-08

Hey hey kids! This is my first thread as president so you'll have to bare with me as I work this out.

Just because it's summer doesn't mean I've forgotten about the club already. I'm on my placement until the end of July so when I finish I'll be kicking some ass to make sure we're in gear for the new year.

There's loads I want the club to get involved with this year, with the main focus on raising our profile around the Uni and making sure we have great connections with the other climbing Uni's.

Last year we didn't really have enough trips so this year I want to get the dates up nice and early so we have a good response. So far we have confirmed:-

Fresher's weekend 1:-Peak District
We will be away from 12th Oct - 14th Oct camping in the usual spot near the pub.

Fresher's weekend 2:-Tremadog
This one will be 2 weekends later, from 26th Oct - 28th OCt. The traditional intro for the Freshers to some nice scary multi-pitch. Also the traditional weekend where the more experienced climber's sit there freezing their asses off belaying!! At the barn at least so a bit warmer than the Peaks.

As far as the later dates in the year go I haven't got that far yet!! Calm down, god, you lot are so pushy!

Other ideas:-

There is no way we can let the bloody Snow club have non-competitve club of the year again, so lots of stuff for R.A.G. such as a sponsored abseil off the lecture centre and so on. If you have any ideas let me know!!!

BUMS reunion! I would really like to get some more of the past members of the club involved. If any of you ex-BUMS see this link please drop me a reply. I would love to get back to the old days at the club (I have been reliably informed by Nana and Ginger Dave that the club used to be a bit more lively) . I think we need to get it back to being a real social club as well as a climbing club.

Annual trip abroad
How bout Font. or Montserrat? If you have any preferences let me know. We'd look to go around the same time as the Portland trip did this year so Easter break. All our welcome!

Right, I've rambled a bit, bugger! More to come from me. Any queries get me on ampa2@fsmail.net. Hope to see some great ideas.

Ant

Duuude!

Da iawn indeed! Got dates down in calendar, so I should be there for both Fresher's trips. Will poke Mark, Dave, Jon, Zay + pre-historic-Ex-BUMS and make sure everyone knows about the dates.

Annual Trip - I've adopted Font for Easter Time. CUMC goes to an awesome campsite where you can have bonfires. That'd be quite nice for BUMS too, I'm thinking?

Anyhows. Books to read and intellect to develop *cough*.

right response of a sort..

it might be hard to get permission to abseil of the lecture centre.. however, if your feeling bold it has been done on the sly before.. (whistles innocently) just make sure you've got some prussics and check boths external staircases as they do have gates but sometimes one of them is unlocked

as for BUMS reunion, sounds good, perhaps partially similar to the annual dinner as it's normally in a hotel and these oldies like their creature comforts! and it's a chance to dress up and have a proper piss up.

annual trip, worthwhile, possible, insurance on the minibus might need investigating, and lenght over there.. also peeps generally are somehow put off with the idea.. but certianly Font at easter or similar could get a good response from the club memebers, just grab some pics, and sell the idea,, also get bloomin deposits so you can get confirmed places etc... cost isn't that prohibitive and as Nana's uni do it - it must work!

also,, climbing over winter,, yes it's colder, but barn/tenting neededn't be that bad! just plan one and be prepared with a local wall listing..

Ant - look on my facebook - posted items. Loads of piccies from Font. I think the general idea is that people do about 10 days in Font. Dunno how much people usually spend.

I spent 6days (5 nights) there. Driving a 3-seater 3.3Litre hungry American beast. Took ferry. Total cost about £150. That's including alcohol and food. So not too bad!

Easiest way is to do fixed cost on the transport and accommo and let people sort their own food and drink on annual trips.

Always go through the peepz @ Wilfred Brown. If you get some staff from there to abseil you can get probably get permission. Just must make extra sure "extra curricular" abseiling doesn't happen on site. To ensure trust from uni side, etc!

Dave - guess reunion is ok with camping - as long there's a good shower!! Don't forget the oldies were camping - they got nice tents!

All good to hear.

Just been down in France, Gorges du Tarn area, most of the climbing
was too hard for me (WEEEEAK!) and there were vultures nesting on the via ferrata route, but there were some beautiful routes, awesome canoeing and paragliding to boot.

Alt. away trip has got to be Dolomites for climbing and also Via F.
cheap flights'll get you there ok.

...and GD, "oldies like their comforts"? you have nooooo idea how comfortable I've NOT been recently:)

life's great.
